Something strange happened when Crusader Kings 3 got its 1.3 update last month. Mods that allowed for same-sex concubines, a feature not present in the unmodded game, all stopped working without warning. The mods even started outputting an oddly homophobic warning message to the user complaining same-sex concubines weren’t allowed.
For context, unmodded CK3 does allow for some same-sex relationships, but not same-sex marriage or concubinage. Players have been partially getting around this by using same-sex concubine mods, but modders have been unable to implement same-sex marriage at all (which is something they have been able to do in CK2).
However, a patch to the game released in March broke these mods. According to a post on the Paradox forums, the 1.3 patch causes the following (slightly homophobic) error message:
“Error: make_concubine effect [ Illegal concubinage: is the same gender as their concubinist, so they can’t become a concubine ]”.
“We said we were looking into it, and we did,” says a Paradox community manager. “So good news there: same-sex concubines should be moddable in the game in an upcoming patch prior to 1.4, and we should have same-sex marriage moddable by 1.4 if everything goes as planned.”
“The change, in this case, was part of a set of fixes around concubine-related behaviors in the game, leading to buggy outcomes like concubines being assigned to dead people,” Paradox told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. “In no way was this implemented in order to deliberately bar players from including same-sex relationships in the game.”
“The issue is that the way some features were implemented in the base game, at this point, make official legal same sex partnerships difficult to mod in without breaking a lot of stuff. The CK3 team, and Paradox as a whole, are very conscious of representation in our games, and same-sex lovers have been included in CK3 since launch – but we know this is not the same thing as a formal relationship. This is something we support, since allowing everyone to tell their story is a big part of our values.”
What’s perhaps notable is that Paradox still isn’t formally including same-sex marriage in Crusader Kings 3 themselves, despite being “very conscious of representation in [their] games”. Instead that representation remains left for player created mods.
There’s no release date set for Crusader Kings’ 1.4 update, but these things tend to take a few months to work their way through quality testing.
