LAS VEGAS — Oscar Dansk is the No. 1 goalie for the Vegas Golden Knights for the foreseeable future after the announcement Sunday that Malcolm Subban is expected to miss four weeks because of a lower-body injury.
With Marc-Andre Fleury and Subban on injured reserve Dansk is expected to make his first NHL start when the Golden Knights host the Chicago Blackhawks at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday (10 p.m. ET; ATTSN-RM NBCSCH NHL.TV).
Dansk 23 got his first NHL win on Saturday when he replaced Subban and made 10 saves in a 3-2 overtime win against the St. Louis Blues.
“It’s obvious it’s the best league in the world,” said Dansk a second-round pick (No. 31) by the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2012 NHL Draft. “It’s fast so obviously I’ve got to be fast as well.”
Subban left the game Saturday with 9:10 remaining in the third period. Dansk was recalled from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League on Thursday.
Fleury has been on injured reserve since Oct. 15 because of a concussion.
The first shot Dansk faced was a goal from Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo but he settled in nicely.
“I’ve dreamt about how it’s going to come about,” Dansk said. “It happened the way it did so it was great to get the experience.”
Dansk signed a one-year contract worth $650,000 with the Golden Knights on July 3. He played two seasons for Erie of the Ontario Hockey League before joining Springfield of the American Hockey League in 2014-15 when he played 21 AHL games.
Dansk spent the past two seasons playing for Rogle BK in Sweden. He went 19-37-0 with a 2.84 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage in 60 games.
Dansk got his first taste of North American hockey when he was 14. He moved from Sweden to Faribault Minnesota and played three seasons for Shattuck-St. Mary’s School. In three seasons he never had a GAA above 2.00.
“That was a big transition for me,” Dansk said. “I was young. It was tough at first but I made lifelong friends there.”
The Golden Knights recalledMaxime Lagace from AHL Chicago on Sunday to be Dansk’s backup. Lagace was recalled to back up Subban prior to the game against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 15.
Despite losing his top two goaltenders Vegas coach Gerard Gallant remains confident. The Golden Knights are off to a 6-1-0 start in their first NHL season.
“Oscar went in there [Saturday] night he made some big saves and played well,” Gallant said. “It’s what happens. Injuries are part of the game in the NHL and you move on to the next guy in line.”
Dansk said he called his parents back home in Sweden after the game. He said his father might be able to make the trip in time for the game Tuesday.
“It’s a tremendous honor,” he said. “It’s something you dream about. For it to come true it’s surreal.”
